Top Hat & Tails

Inspired by Hyde family photographs from across the generations

Dressed in their Sunday best…

These well dressed canine characters may look modern, but they were inspired by a wall of photographs in Doug’s parents hallway going back to Victorian times. Everyone in this rather formal family archive is dressed in their sunday best, and this set Doug’s creative mind whirring. Before long, the thoroughly engaging concept of top hats and tails was born, leading to one of his best loved collections ever.

“I based the artwork on actual photographs as I wanted this collection to have a touch of realism to it, however I have preserved several elements which are characteristic of my work such as the eyes and the monochromatic dogs. I particularly wanted to have a black background with the character emerging from the shadows to give that slightly classic or historic atmosphere. This strong sense of tradition is contrasted with the colourful clothes or accessories which bring each image to life and give it a sense of modernity and fun.”

Before long, the witty and thoroughly engaging concept of top hats and tails was born, leading to one of his best loved collections ever.
